What is National Window Safety Week?

With the arrival of spring, you can spot many open windows around New York City, letting in the sunshine and spring breeze. National Window Safety Week is observed during the first full week of April each year just as the windows begin to open around New York City. This campaign spreads awareness to help families understand the role of windows in escaping an emergency and to safeguard against accidental window falls.

Window Guards in New York City

New York City was the first major city in the United States to adopt a window guard ordinance. Child fall injuries and deaths have drastically declined since the ordinance was put into place in 1976. Window guards are metal or aluminum devices specifically designed to prevent children from falling out of windows. These devices are not designed to stop a burglar. Window guards should be placed in every window of residential buildings and in common areas, except for windows leading to fire escapes. All window types should have window guards or limiting devices, including sliding windows with screens. Insect screens should never be relied upon to prevent a window fall. Screens cannot support the weight of a child. In New York City, the ordinance states that window guards must be installed in all residential buildings with three or more units under the following conditions:

  • All windows of a unit in which a child under the age of 10 is a full-time resident.
  • All windows in hallways and common areas of a building where a child under the age of 10 is a full-time resident.
  • Full-time residents may request window guards for any reason, even if there are no children in a unit. (in a building with 3+ units).

Additional Tips to Keep Everyone Safe Around Windows

  • Check that existing window guards are properly installed. Gently but firmly push on the window guards to make sure the bars don’t feel loose. Screws should be tightly fastened and secured on both sides of the window guard. Measure to make sure there is no more than a 4.5 in gap of space between bars or the bars and window sills. Inspect window frames for loose or rotting wood or crumbling plaster. If the window structure is not sound, the window guard will not hold.
  • Close and lock all windows when they are not in use. Also, make sure to always lock doors to balconies when not in use. Never leave a child unsupervised on a balcony.
  • Open windows from the top instead of the bottom whenever that is an option.
  • Window stops should be used to prevent windows from opening more than four inches. Window stops allow you to enjoy a fresh breeze while ensuring windows won’t open wide enough to invite a fall.
  • Never leave small children unattended around open windows. Keep children’s play areas away from windows. Keep furniture away from windows to help prevent children from climbing up to an open window.

National Window Safety Week is in April, but we encourage you to practice window safety all year long! At Sentry Window Guards our main focus is your child’s safety. We provide various types of childproof window locking mechanisms and safety devices for your home or building. How to Stay Safe While Traveling This Holiday Season

During the holidays, many families can be found traveling near and far to be with loved ones. It is the best part of the season!  Whether you are traveling for a quick overnight trip or for a longer period of time, it’s important to take steps to make sure everyone stays safe. Take time to protect your family with this checklist:

  • Suppress the urge to broadcast your holiday travel plans on social media sites both before and during your trip. While traveling, it is best to inform only those who need to know. There will be plenty of time to share thoughts and photos of your trip after you are safely home.
  • Enroll in the Notify NYC alert system, which is New York City’s official source for information about emergency alerts and important city services. You can receive alerts through email, text, telephone, or social media. This will keep you informed about what is going on in your neighborhood while you are traveling.
  • If you are staying in a hotel or in another travel venue, make sure the security features like door locks, alarms, and safes are working when you first arrive. Packing a few simple safety items like a small wedge doorstop, safety whistle, and flashlight can also be helpful.
  • To ensure the safekeeping of your electronics, wallet, medications, valuables and other travel essentials while traveling by plane, pack them in your carry-on luggage.
  • Pack smart with only the necessities. As the saying goes, “after you pack your bag, take 50% of it out!” Carrying around bags that are too heavy or are worn incorrectly can cause injury to muscles and joints. Plus, overloading your vehicle with cargo can put you and others in danger. Make sure your view isn’t obstructed out the back or side windows. Secure any items that may cause harm in an accident.
  • Holiday traveling can quickly tire you out. Make frequent stops to rest or just stretch your legs. It’s important to keep your energy level high enough to stay alert. Staying nourished and hydrated will keep you at the top of your game.
  • If you are traveling in your personal car, get a tune-up. The last thing you want during your holiday trip is to have problems with your car! While it is important to stay on top of regular car maintenance throughout the year, we strongly recommend a tune-up before a road trip. Be sure the oil, water, tire pressure, tire tread, and lights are checked at a minimum. Check that the registration and insurance of the vehicle are up to date and that you have the correct documents. Make sure you know how to file an insurance claim if necessary.
  • Practice safe driving. Buckle everyone up, don’t speed, and be aware of things that might distract you while driving. Did you know driving drowsy is a contributing factor in many accidents every year? Switch off with another adult driver when necessary and get a good night’s sleep prior to your trip.
  • Have fun! Part of the fun of any travel is being spontaneous so build some flexibility in your schedule. Of course you will want to plan your final destination and overnight stops, but you should also leave time for spontaneity. If a weird sign or billboard piques your interest, why not see where it leads? Stopping at random places along the way will add to the memories.

12 of the Most Important Home Safety Tips for Aging Relatives

New York City families consistently struggle with home safety and the best way to adapt housing to help aging relatives. Whether this means keeping them in their own home or modifying a family member’s home, there are many items to take under consideration. Falls, burns, and poisonings are among the most common accidents involving older people. If an older adult is in overall good health, there are many things that can be done to help them continue to live independently. In addition to  checking in on them frequently, here are some important home tips to keep everyone safe.

  1. Create an open environment in the home by making sure all hallways, stairs, and paths are well lit and clear of objects such as books or shoes. Decluttering helps clear out rooms and walkways giving older adults more room to move, hopefully reducing the possibility of trips and falls.
  2. Rugs can be a tripping hazard, especially for older adults using walkers, canes, or shoes with inserts. If you do not want to remove rugs, tape or tack all edges to the floor and add anti-slip pads.
  3. Replace all standard door knobs with lever handles which are easier for older adults to grasp.
  4. Thoroughly inspect the stairs looking for uneven steps or wobbly floorboards. Apply non-skid treads on the steps if necessary. You can also paint stair tops a contrasting color making them easier to see.
  5. Tighten inside and outside handrails by checking the hardware that supports the handrail to make sure it’s firmly attached and in good condition.
  6. Water, rugs, slippery surfaces, and small spaces can all make it difficult to maneuver around in bathrooms, leading to slips and falls. Install grab bars around the tub, shower, and toilet. You can also get a special shower chair or bench and a raised toilet seat. Installing a hand-held showerhead makes the shower easier to use, especially when cleaning hard-to-reach places. Use non-slip mats and rugs to eliminate falls on slippery surfaces.
  7. Moving frequently used kitchen items to lower shelves can prevent older adults from reaching and losing balance or trying to use stools or stepladders.
  8. Setting the thermostat on the water heater no higher than 120° F will help prevent accidental burns.
  9. Help them remain safe in the home by installing a peephole and reminding them not to answer the door to strangers when they are home alone.
  10. Alert your loved one to ongoing scams targeting seniors. Remind them to talk over offers made by telephone salespeople with a friend or family member and not to share personal information, such as social security number, credit card, bank information, or account passwords with people they do not know.
  11. Prevent window falls by using properly installed window guards.
  12. Install a mail slot in the front door to help prevent mail theft and make it easier to receive mail.

5 Things to Know About Window Replacement

New windows can make your home quieter, more attractive, less drafty and can require less maintenance than older windows. Windows also play a vital role in the security and energy efficiency of your home. If you are considering window replacement, there are some things to keep in mind. We have rounded up the list below.

Consider the Functionality

How do you want your new windows to open? You will need to know the difference between fixed, casement, single/double hung, awning, and sliding windows to determine which one is best for your specific situation. Also, what type of material would best suit your home – wood, vinyl or fiberglass?

Look for Energy Efficient Options

Every window has a label that summarizes the overall energy performance. To qualify for Energy Star status, window manufacturers have to meet standards on the two main metrics below. For both U-Value and SHGC, the lower the number, the better the window should perform.

  • U-value: measures a window unit’s resistance to heat loss
  • Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC): measures how much heat enters a home through the glass

Ensure an Exact Fit

The best windows in the world will not provide you with the energy efficiency and the protection you desire if they do not fit or are not installed properly. Without an airtight seal on your new windows, you may be left with issues down the road such as water damage and increased energy consumption. You may want to consider custom-made replacement windows to ensure an exact fit.

Verify Correct Installation

Your new windows are only as good as the practices used to install them. Installation, including anchoring, insulating, and sealing the window to the house to make it airtight and watertight, is as important as the quality of the window itself. Poor installation can result in water damage to your home and can void your window’s warranty. Verify that your installer has been trained by the manufacturer for the brand of window you are having installed. Also, choose an expert that will stand by their work.

Add Protection

Each year, young children are injured or die in falls from unguarded windows, even from the first floor. These tragedies are preventable with properly installed and approved window guards, which are required in many residential buildings. If you reside in New York City, homeowners must have window guards on their windows by law if children 10 years or younger are living in the home. Properly installed window guards are your best defense in preventing window falls. You can’t ever rely on insect screens to prevent a window fall. Screens alone cannot support the weight of a child.

6 Tips for Staying Safe on the Road this Summer

Summer is a popular time to hit the open road for a little relaxation, adventure, or family bonding time and staying safe is key. We have beautiful sites to visit and explore in our area of the country so you don’t have to travel too far to find a great destination. Whether you are traveling for a quick overnight trip or for a longer period of time, it’s important to do some prep work to help make your trip as safe as possible.

  • Get a tune up. The last thing you want during your summer road trip is to have problems with your car! While it is important to stay on top of regular car maintenance throughout the year, we strongly recommend a tune-up before a road trip. Be sure the oil, fluids, tire pressure, tire tread, wiper blades, and lights are checked at a minimum. Check that the registration and insurance of the vehicle are up to date and that you have the correct documents. Make sure you know how to file a claim if necessary.
  • Check the air conditioning.  A lack of air conditioning in a car on a hot summer day affects everyone, but is particularly dangerous for people who are in poor health or who are sensitive to heat, such as children and older adults. So check and optimize the performance of the air conditioning in your car before taking off on the road.
  • Pack smart. Overloading your vehicle can put you and others in danger. Make sure your view isn’t obstructed out the back or side windows. Secure any items that may cause harm in an accident.
  • Practice safe driving. Buckle everyone up, don’t speed, and be aware of things that might distract you while driving. Did you know driving drowsy is a contributing factor in many accidents every year? Switch off with another adult driver when necessary and get a good night’s sleep prior to your trip.
  • Eat healthy and stay hydrated. The temptation to grab a snack or a bag of candy at every gas station, as well as to eat out at restaurants or pick up fast food, can really add to the cost of your trip. It can also add to your waistline! So load up on healthy snacks, water, and even pre-made portable meals before you leave. Find a rest stop or scenic pulloff to stop at and eat along the way. The Roadtrippers app can help you find the perfect spot. Planning a safe place to stop can prevent you from eating behind the wheel which takes your attention off the road.
  • Keep an emergency kit in your car. Prepare for the unexpected on your road trip by packing an emergency kit with items like a portable cell phone charger, first aid kit, flashlight, flares, jumper cables, candle and matches, basic repair tools, duct tape, blankets, a few non-perishable food items, and extra water.

Allow plenty of time to get to your final destination and enjoy the ride. Remember that summer road trips can be unpredictable, so don’t forget to laugh at even the messy moments along the way! Use these safety tips to take a break from “real life” and enjoy each moment on your summer trip to the fullest with those you love.
