Brooklyn Chamber Launches Brooklyn Made Certification Program

Defining What Counts as “Brooklyn Made”

The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce recently unveiled its new Brooklyn Made certification program this Friday at Brooklyn Eats, the Chamber’s food and beverage trade show taking place at 630 Flushing Avenue. The certification program, which began as an initiative of the Chamber to promote locally manufactured goods, comes on the heels of a nine-month research effort through the NYU Wagner Capstone Program.

“The Food and Beverage industry is a growing, thriving sector in Brooklyn, accounting for 27% of all manufacturing in the borough,” said Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Carlo A. Scissura. “What better place to launch the Brooklyn Made program than at the hottest food and beverage show in New York City, where our authentic producers showcase the Brooklyn brand to exclusive buyers and the food-loving public.”

The Chamber has developed a points-based scale system for certification of specific product lines. The Brooklyn Made certification will result in different levels of “Brooklyn-ness,” from bronze certification, to silver or gold level depending on the level of operations taking place in the borough.

As baseline criteria, only legal businesses headquartered in Brooklyn making one or more physical products will be considered. From there, the points-based system will evaluate a range of manufacturing activities, taking into account criteria such as share of total employees located in Brooklyn, location of product assembly, where design and development takes place, and other important factors.

Interested businesses can apply by completing an online application, which can be found on the Chamber’s website. An independent advisory board, consisting of Brooklyn-based manufacturing stakeholders, will review applications on a quarterly basis. There will be a $50 one-time fee for non-members, and $25 fee for member businesses. The fee will be waived for those who choose to apply at Brooklyn Eats, which will take place on Friday, June 27 at 630 Flushing Avenue.

“Brooklyn is a growing brand that the whole world wants to get in on, from Dutch coffee shops, to Swedish vodka companies, to Midwestern parents choosing baby names,” said Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce President Carlo A. Scissura. “Brooklyn stands for authentic local craftsmanship, and when you see the Brooklyn Made label, you know that’s what you are getting. There are a lot of pretenders, and we want to make sure we protect the real deal makers who are getting it done here in the coolest city on the planet.”

“Brooklyn’s history and its future are tied to our manufacturing and industrial sectors. The Brooklyn Made program recognizes the responsibility we have to protect our businesses from imposters trying to capitalize on the honest efforts of those who have contributed to Brooklyn’s culture and economy,” said Chamber of Commerce Board Chair Denise Arbesu. “It’s wonderful that Brooklyn has been recognized as such a leader in innovation and creativity. No doubt, the entire Brooklyn brand has become hot and desirable. The Brooklyn Made label is a great way for our consumers to identify products that are made here and for all of Brooklyn to be proud of what we are producing.”

The Brooklyn Made program was made possible in large part to a team of NYU Wagner students as part of their capstone program. Their full report is available on the Chamber’s website at www.ibrooklyn.com.

“The ‘Brooklyn Made’ certification program exemplifies the impact of the NYU Wagner Capstone program,” said Sherry Glied, Dean of New York University’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. “In this case, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce approached us to help create an official certification program that producers could use to promote themselves as authentically ‘Made in Brooklyn.’ A team of NYU Wagner students developed a solution that benefits communities across Brooklyn and NYC as a whole.”

Chamber Member Gaia DiLoreto served as an advisor on Brooklyn Made throughout the process. As the owner of By Brooklyn, Located at 261 Smith Street, DiLoreto sells only Brooklyn-made products.

“The mission of By Brooklyn is to promote and protect the Brooklyn brand so I’m excited that the Chamber of Commerce is taking that effort to the next level,” said DiLoreto, “I will encourage all of my vendors to submit for Brooklyn Made certification and I will look for it from future vendors as well.”

Ed Mafoud of Damascus Bakeries, located at 50 Gold Street, is one of the 90 food and beverage makers taking part in Brooklyn Eats this Friday and was a recipient of one of the Chamber’s inaugural Made in Brooklyn awards at its annual meeting last year.

“There are 84 years of Brooklyn cruising through our veins. My grandfather started Damascus Bakery in 1930 in Brooklyn because he believed in Brooklyn and the promise of the Present and the Future,” said Mafoud. “My Brother David and I hold the same passion for Brooklyn today as well as tomorrow!”

The logo that will make it easy for consumers to see what truly counts as “Brooklyn Made,” were designed by Hannah Trimble of Trimble Racing, Brooklynite and Brooklyn Chamber Member since February 2012.

Window Guards | It’s the Law in New York! Are yours installed correctly?

As the cooler months approach, folks in New York are beginning to open their windows to enjoy the seasonal change. With more frequent window use, it is critical to have proper protection for the children in your life. When the windows are opened to provide fresh air, especially in children’s bedrooms and bathrooms, as well as accessible windows on upper floors, windows should be secured, and if unlocked, should either have a window guard installed or should be limited to open no more than 4.5 inches. Periodically checking to see that the window’s locking mechanism is working properly should also be a part of your fall routine.

In New York, if tenants or occupants want window guards for any reason, even if there are no resident children 10 years of age or younger, the tenant can request the window guards in writing and the landlord must install them. Owners have a responsibility to ensure that window guards are properly installed. For example, grandparents who have visiting children, parents who share custody and occupants who provide child care may wish to request window guards.

If required or requested window guards have not been installed or if they appear to be insecure or improperly installed, or if there is more than 4.5 inches of open unguarded space in the window opening, a complaint should be made immediately, either by calling Sentry Window Guards or calling 311.

WINDOW SCREENS WILL NOT PREVENT A CHILD FROM FALLING OUT!

Window screens are never an acceptable safety device to prevent a child from falling or climbing out of a window. Windows less than 18” above the ground should have a window guard. If you have window guards installing in your home, this is a great time of year to make sure that your window guards have been installed correctly.

  • Window guards must be installed right and screwed in tight
  • Only New York City approved window guards should be installed. They must be made of strong metal, and (by law) must be installed tightly or they won’t work.
  • If a window guard feels wobbly when you push and pull the bars, it could come loose or fall out when a child leans against it or climbs on it.
  • The window guard must be screwed in tight on both sides with special screws. If it is loose on either side, it has not been put in right.
  • If the window guard is screwed into a rotting window frame or a loose window frame, it could come loose or fall out.

Your family’s safety is our number one priority. Give us a call to come out and check your window guards.

Window Guards Protect Children, New York

It still happens–each year in New York kids fall from windows and are either seriously injured or may be killed. Did you know that even if a child falls from a first-floor window, they may be die? It happens in the blink of an eye, but window guards can prevent these horrific accidents.

Sure, screens help to keep then insects out, but they cannot prevent falls from windows. Only window guards are a certain way to prevent accidents. All window guards in New York must be approved by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and they are the law!

Make sure your window guards are:

  1. approved, and
  2. properly installed.

THE LAW: If you live in a building that has 3 or more apartments, and a child age 10 years or younger lives with you, window guards are required (even on the first floor). Landlords are responsible for installing and maintaining window guards. Every window in your apartment is required to have a window guard, except windows leading to fire escapes. In buildings with fire escapes, window guards must be left off one window in each ground-floor apartment so the window can be used as an emergency exit. All public hallway windows must have window guards, too.

Even if you do not have a child 10 years or younger living with you, you can still have window guards if you want them. For example, you might want window guards
• To protect children who visit or for whom you care, including children with special needs, or
• For added security, but you don’t have to have a reason.

Protect children from window falls

  1. NEVER leave a child alone in a room where there are open windows that do not have window guards.
  2. If your window guards aren’t installed yet, keep your bottom windows closed. Open only your top windows for fresh air.
  3. Keep furniture that children can climb on away from all windows.
  4. NEVER let a child play:
    • On a fire escape
    • On a roof
    • In halls with windows that do not have window guards
    • Near elevator shafts
    • Near steps or stairs

If your landlord hasn’t provided window guards, refuses to respond to your request for window guards, or if you have other problems with window guards that you can’t resolve with your landlord, call 311 or the Health Department’s Window Falls Prevention Program at (212) 676-2162.

Property Managers: Are your New York Window Guards Up to Par?

Window Guards for Property Managers

The New York City law requires landlords to mount window guards in every apartment where a child aged 10 or under lives or when a resident requests them, including ground floor apartments.

It’s that time of year! Folks are throwing back the drapes and letting the light and air of spring and summer indoors! This is the most important time to make sure window guards are installed where children are living and that they are properly installed on all windows. Every window in your New York building should have a window guard.

Installing window guards has been essential for safety in New York City and the state implemented a law stating that anyone in a building can request window guards from their landlord, for any reason. As a property manager you must supply window guard notices to tenants who complete and return them. Be sure you are up to date on your window guard requests by apartment dwellers!

The New York City law requires landlords to mount window guards in every apartment where a child aged 10 or under lives or when a resident requests them, including ground floor apartments.

Windows can very often be hazardous for young children. According to a CNN blog, 5,000 children per year end up in the emergency room from window falls. This fact poses a considerable risk to your property management. Additionally, windows without window guards may pose a risk for possible break-ins.

You must give you the notice within the first 30 days after the start of the lease. And, every year after that, between January 1 and January 16 (or earlier with your January rent bill), landlords must send another notice to tenants to find out if a child 10 years of age or younger lives in the home, or if the tenant wants window guards for any other reason.

To improve safety on your properties, consider offering to install window guards on all windows.

A common question our team gets is, “Do I need to install window guards even if there are window stops?” Unfortunately, window stops are not a substitute for window guards. Window stops keep the window from opening fully. However, some residents may want to let more air into the property and remove the window stop, which completely opens the window. This creates the potential for accidents to occur.

We have assisted property managers all across New York and we’re happy to share our work with you. Should you need assistance in the proper window guard selection for your building or how to stay within the parameters of the law, please give us a call.

Hidden Home Hazard for Kids: Falls from Windows

By CBSNEWS:

You might not know it to look at them, but experts say they pose a potential hazard for kids in your home, and they’re hidden in plain sight: open windows.

Every year in the United States, some four thousand children are injured in falls from windows, and several die, according to Safe Kids USA.

In just the past few weeks, youngsters have fallen from windows in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Nebraska and Texas.

The problem tends to get worse in warmer weather, when more windows are left open, points out “Early Show” Consumer Correspondent Susan Koeppen. She says kids ages 4 and under are most at risk, and the falls tend to happen around noon and after 5 o’clock, when parents are usually busy making meals. And it can be a problem whether you live in the city or the suburbs.

On “The Early Show” Wednesday, Koeppen told the tragic story of Ashley Reck, whose 4-year-old son, Parker, fell through the screen of an open bedroom window last May and lost his life. Ironically, it occurred during a housewarming party for the family’s new home in Molalla, Ore.

It happened, Reck says, “in an instant. You don’t realize how fast things happen. Within four hours, I had my son running around and then I was … saying goodbye.”

About 5,000 Kids Fall From Windows Each Year

More than 5,000 U.S. children and teens are injured each year in falls from windows, according to a study that suggests the problem stretches beyond urban high-rises. The research found many children fall from first- and second-story windows. “This is more than just a big-city problem,” said senior author Dr. Gary Smith of Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Suburban mother, Beth Harlan, knows that to be true. Two years ago, her daughter, Sidney Dillon, then age 6, fell from a second-story window in their home in Galloway, just west of Columbus. The girl was sitting on the sill and leaned against the window screen. Harlan walked into the room as the screen gave way.

“I came upstairs just in time to see her falling out the window,” Harlan said. Luckily, Sidney fell into a bush and fresh landscaping mulch. An X-ray ruled out broken bones. Still, the accident frightened both mother and daughter. “Don’t ever think that kind of thing can’t happen to you,” Harlan said. “Never in a million years, when I opened up the window, did I think my kid would decide to sit in a windowsill.” Harlan’s daughter was older than the typical child who falls. Preschoolers are at the highest risk and they suffer more head injuries than older children. “Two-thirds of these injuries occurred among children younger than 5. This is the age group that’s mobile, curious and does not recognize the danger of falling from a window,” Smith said.

Window guards can keep children from falling out of windows. Screens are only for keeping bugs out. They will not protect your children. Only window guards will keep kids safely inside.
